SUMMARY:Vibrant Places: Waterfowl at Grand Valley Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Some say the American Robin is the harbinger of spring\, but the swans\, ducks\, geese\, and shorebirds might disagree. The Land Conservancy has partnered with Greater Cleveland Audubon to host a morning of birding just as waterfowl are making their strongest push north through Ohio and shorebirds are beginning to pass our way. If conditions are right\, we could see up to 29 species of waterfowl\, including three swans. \nThe Land Conservancy’s Grand Valley Ranch protects 1\,200 acres of ideal habitat for waterfowl and various waterbirds. Permanently conserved in 2015\, the Land Conservancy has restored the site from historical high-impact uses (agriculture\, mining\, and aquaculture) to a natural\, 3-mile long\, flow-through wetland complex. Utilizing funds from Clean Ohio\, USFWS\, and the Ohio EPA\, $3.5M was invested in the property to restore this ancient Tamarack Swamp.

SUMMARY:Common Ground
DESCRIPTION:The Way International™ in New Knoxville\, OH is hosting a free showing of Common Ground at 6 PM on Saturday\, March 2\, 2024. Admission is open to the general public\, and refreshments will be served.\n\nThe film explores how Americans from different walks of life\, different political backgrounds\, and different parts of the country share one thing in common – the very soil beneath our feet. This hopeful and uplifting story of the pioneers of the “Regenerative Movement”  explores how to bring entire ecosystems back to life and unlock more (and healthier\, more nutrient-dense) food to feed America and the world\, while simultaneously restoring the natural cycles that regulate weather and climate. Investigating “regenerative” farming systems on both large to small-scale farms\, the movie cast includes: Laura Dern\, Rosario Dawson\, Jason Mamoa\, Woody Harrelson\, Ian Somerhalder\, and Donald Glover.\n\nAfter the film\, farmer and rancher Dr. Allen Williams will discuss the film and the regenerative agriculture movement planting across the country. Allen is the founding partner of Grass Fed Insights\, Understanding Ag\, and Soil Health Academy.\n\nThe Victor Paul Wierwille Word Over the World Auditorium is located at 19100 East Shelby Road in New Knoxville\, and a movie trailer and more information is available at: https://events.theway.org/commonground

SUMMARY:Nurturing our Conservation Land Ethic
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 7 at 6:00 PM\nWestern Reserve Land Conservancy’s Harmony Hall\n3850 Chagrin River Road\nMoreland Hills\, OH 44022 \nJoin us for an in-person gathering to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Aldo Leopold’s book A Sand County Almanac. We will welcome Buddy Huffaker\, the Executive Director of the Aldo Leopold Foundation\, to our Conservation Center in Moreland Hills for his presentation Aldo Leopold\, the Land Ethic\, and A Sand County Almanac: The Making of an American Classic. Mr. Huffaker will discuss Aldo Leopold’s most famous book and his appeal for us to develop a strong conservation land ethic. The presentation will be followed by a reception with Mr. Huffaker\, as well as a conservation book fair coordinated by Loganberry Books. Copies of A Sand County Almanac\, as well as many other titles will be available for purchase. \nWhile Aldo Leopold’s impact on the conservation movement is broad and deep\, he is mostly known as the author of the now classic A Sand County Almanac. Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2024\, A Sand County Almanac has been translated into sixteen languages and serves as one of the foundational texts for anyone that cares about people and places. But becoming a classic doesn’t happen overnight\, it requires great writing\, and often a few twists of fate. Buddy will provide a quick biographical sketch of Aldo Leopold and then focus on the people and events that have kept A Sand County Almanac and the call for a Land Ethic as relevant as ever. \nSpecial thanks to Tom and Kathy Leiden for sponsoring this program. The Leidens are devoted supporters of conservation and understand the importance of protecting diverse\, balanced ecosystem for the survival of all plants and animals. We are proud to partner with them to bring Mr. Huffaker to Northeast Ohio. \nBuddy Huffaker joined the Aldo Leopold Foundation in 1996 as a seasonal intern and has served as Executive Director since 1999. During his tenure the foundation has grown the Leopold Community by protecting the Leopold Shack & Farm (the inspiration and setting for much of the classic A Sand County Almanac) as a National Historic Landmark\, constructing the LEED Platinum Aldo Leopold Legacy Center out of trees planted by the Leopold family\, producing the Emmy Award winning documentary GreenFire\, and supporting ten different foreign translations of A Sand County Almanac. The foundation continues the Leopold family’s commitment to stewardship through the restoration and management of the 4\,400-acre Leopold-Pines Conservation Area and by using this experience to inform and inspire other landowners to adopt and implement their own land ethic. Buddy’s leadership in the conservation movement includes service on state and federal advisory committees and participation in three White House Conferences on conservation and environmental education.
