SUMMARY:Zoom into Nature: Flying Squirrels
DESCRIPTION:Zoom into Nature series is back and starts on Tuesday\, October 1 at 6:30 PM ET. We’re kicking off this year’s series with a program on Flying Squirrels with Dr. Don Althoff\, Certified Wildlife Biologist & Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Rio Grande. Dr. Althoff will share with us what he’s learned about these fascinating\, elusive\, and adorable mammals during his decades of research. \nTuesday\, October 1 from 6:30 to 8 pm ET\nPresenter: Dr. Don Althoff\, Certified Wildlife Biologist & Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Conservation\, University of Rio Grande\nFREE \nJoin us virtually as we welcome Dr. Don Althoff for his presentation Southern Flying Squirrels: Facts and Fascination with a Woodland Wonder. Don started studying southern flying squirrels in 1995 and since that time has had the opportunity to monitor several local populations in southeast Ohio—especially during the past 15 years. He will share a combination of observations gleaned from having flying squirrels outfitted with radio telemetry collars\, annual winter box checks for occupancy\, and hard mast surveys (aka nut counts) to evaluate the link between their prime food resource and population trends. Details of a few incredible glides he has witnessed will be described along with some of the techniques he uses to handle squirrels to allow weighing\, sexing\, and ear-tagging. Natural history info such as diet and habitat will also be shared. \nAbout Donald Althoff\, Ph.D. \nDr. Althoff is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Rio Grande. He earned his B.S. in wildlife management from the Ohio State University\, M.S. in Wildlife Sciences from the University of Nebraska\, and Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology from Pennsylvania State University. He has conducted research in forest and grassland ecosystems with the focus on a variety of species ranging from vertebrates and plants to nematodes. One of his main endeavors since the mid-1990s has been southern flying squirrel in southeast Ohio—including evaluation of an aging technique and the influence of annual hard mast production on local populations. That effort is a component of the Rio EcoMonitoring Project that provides hands-on learning opportunities for University of Rio Grande undergraduates participating in inventory and monitoring of local flora and fauna. \nZoom into Nature is the Land Conservancy’s popular virtual series that covers a wide range of topics. These webinars are held every couple of weeks on Tuesday evenings October through May.

SUMMARY:Summer Tour 24
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends and Followers of the Logan County Land Trust \nWe are excited to announce a summer opportunity to visit the Flint Ridge State Memorial\, The Wilds\, and Old Man’s Cave. The trip is being offered by the Logan County Land Trust. This is our 4th annual Summer Tour. \nThe trip will take place on Friday\, August 02. We will be leaving from the Benjamin Logan bus circle at 7:00 A. M. and returning at about 8:00 P. M. Transportation will be provided via a motor coach provided by the Lima Buckeye Bus Company. \nWe will travel from Benjamin Logan to the Flint Ridge State memorial near Newark. Flint Ridge is a nearly eight-mile-long vein of high-quality flint located in Licking and Muskingum counties of eastern Ohio. Hundreds of quarry pits and workshop sites are scattered across more than 2\,000 acres of ridgetop in these Appalachian foothills. It has been called the “Great Indian Quarry of Ohio.”  \nFrom Flint Ridge we will travel to The Wilds near Zanesville. Spanning over 10\,000 acres in southeast Ohio\, The Wilds is one of the largest conservation centers in the world. Threatened and endangered species roam open pastures with endless vistas and provide an ideal setting to study ecological recovery and restoration.  \nBox lunches will be served while we travel from The Wilds to Hocking Hills State Park. \nOur final stop will be to tour Old Man’s Cave at Hocking Hills State Park. Old Man’s Cave area can be divided into five principal sections found along the valley of Old Man’s Creek. In order\, they are: Upper Falls\, Upper Gorge\, Middle Falls\, Lower Falls and Lower Gorge. Along the length of the trail the magnificent gorge cuts through the entire 150-foot thickness of the Black Hand Sandstone. Carved by the creek\, the gorge serves as an avenue for visitors to peer into the earth’s subsurface. The full distance of the gorge is approximately one half mile.  \nFollowing our tour of Old’s Man’s Cave we will return to Benjamin Logan with a dinner stop en route. \nThe cost for the trip is sixty-five dollars ($65) for adults and forty-five dollars ($45) for students (18 and under). This amount covers only a portion of the cost of transportation\, admission and tours\, as well as lunch and dinner. The balance of the expenses are funded through grants obtained by the Land Trust. \nSpace is limited. We can take forty people only. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We hope that as many of you as possible will take advantage of this offer to learn more about the environment and habitat diversity in Ohio.  \nPayment may be made using PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/us/home) and choosing the  “Friends and Family” option. There is a 2.9% payor fee when using a credit or debit card. Bank account payments have no fee. Make Paypal payments to : \nbhsmith325@gmail.com  \nIf you wish to pay by check (made payable to The Logan County Land Trust)\, please send your payment to: \nMr. Bob Stoll\nLogan County Land Trust\n5952 S R 540\nBellefontaine\, OH 43311 \nAfter making payment\, please email us  smithb@benjaminlogan.org with the names and ages (18 and under) of those joining us for the trip.  Also\, please make note of any dietary restrictions. All deposits must be received by July 18. \nThis is a very special opportunity. We hope that you will join us.
