The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club has embarked on a whirlwind of activities, making this year an unforgettable journey for its thirty-plus members. From invasives clearing to cider making, daphnia toxicity studies, and a captivating trip along the riparian zone at the Stoll farm, the club has been actively engaging students in hands-on experiences that foster a deep appreciation for the environment.
Freshwater Farms Adventure: A Glimpse into Sustainable Aquaculture
The latest adventure for the club led them to Freshwater Farms near Urbana, a pioneering establishment with a rich history spanning forty years. Founded by Dr. Dave Smith and his family, Freshwater Farms isn’t just about producing fish for the retail trade; it’s a testament to the intersection of conservation, regenerative agricultural practices, and energy-saving initiatives.
During their visit, students delved into the fascinating world of trout farming, learning about the entire lifecycle – from the hatching of 25,000 trout eggs four times a year to the development of fish that can reach up to six pounds. The outdoor tanks echoed with the sounds of eager fish consuming feed provided by the students. Additionally, the adventure included interactive moments such as holding turtles (excluding the large snapping turtle) and petting sturgeon. The trip concluded on a delicious note with a sampling of Freshwater Farms’ smoked trout and trout spread.
Sustainability in Action: Freshwater Farms’ Commitment
Freshwater Farms stands out not only for its fish production but for its commitment to sustainability and habitat improvement. By seamlessly integrating conservation and regenerative agricultural practices with energy-saving measures, the operation serves as an inspiring example of responsible and environmentally conscious farming.
Environmental Stewardship at its Core: The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club
In its seventh year, the Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club continues to thrive, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Benjamin Logan Local School and the Logan County Land Trust. Co-directed by Ryan Kerns, Spencer Reames, Bruce Smith, and Bob Stoll, the club provides a platform for students to explore, learn, and actively participate in environmental initiatives.
