Discovering, Learning, and Doing: Environmental Science Club Builds Skills for Life and Stewardship

Discovering, learning, and doing—these three words perfectly describe the experience of students in the Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club (ESC). The start of the new year has been filled with engaging lessons that connect science, health, conservation, and hands-on problem solving. Understanding the Smallest Forms of Life January began with a fascinating exploration of the relative sizes of life forms. Students examined just how tiny bacteria and viruses are when compared to something familiar—the width of a human hair. This eye-opening activity led to meaningful discussions about human health, how infections spread, and what steps people can take to reduce...

Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club Explores Microscopic Life and Wildlife Populations

Young scientists in the Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club (ESC) recently dove deep into the world of science—both microscopic and ecological—through two engaging, hands-on learning experiences that brought classroom concepts to life. Seeing the Unseen: Life Under the Microscope In one recent session, students learned how to properly use a compound light microscope, gaining skills in selecting magnification, focusing specimens, and adjusting the diaphragm to control light. Working in pairs, the group examined Daphnia, commonly known as water fleas—tiny crustaceans about the size of a BB that play a critical role in aquatic ecosystems as a primary food source for...

Logan County Land Trust Holds Annual Meeting and Announces New Leadership for 2025

The Logan County Land Trust (LCLT) held its Annual Meeting on March 17, 2025, at the Solid Waste Building Conference Room, bringing together board members to review organizational updates and elect new officers for the coming year. The meeting was called to order by Renee Winner, with the following directors in attendance: Renee Winner, Linda Vernon, Mark, Bruce, Greg, Bob, Catherine, Tom, and April. Directors Andrea and Lindsay were unable to attend. One of the key actions of the evening was the election of officers. The board unanimously elected: These leadership transitions mark an important step forward as the Land...

Preserving our past, protecting our future

It is so easy to live, work, and be part of a community, and yet never really know the extent of what is around us. Logan County is no different. We slip into our comfort zones, traveling the same roads and routines every day, and forget to branch out. But what if we took the time to look closer? How many “field trips” could we take in our own county that would open our eyes to treasures we pass by without even noticing? Sometimes, visitors know more about our local gems than we do as residents. As your local electric...

Creativity Takes Flight: Environmental Science Club Designs New Bird Species & Builds New Partnerships

Imagination. Creativity. Observation. Adaptation. These four concepts lie at the heart of nature, and the Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club has spent the past few weeks exploring all of them through hands-on, minds-on learning. Students Create Their Own Bird Species A couple of weeks ago, ESC students were challenged to think like real ornithologists. Working in small groups, they were asked to design an entirely new species of bird, one that could realistically survive in a habitat of their choosing. This activity required them to use: This past Wednesday, the groups took their work further, collaborating, negotiating, and presenting their final...

Environmental Science Club Explores Agriculture, Soil Health, and the Mad River at the Historic Stoll Farm

The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club recently made its annual visit to the Stoll Farm in Zanesfield, a hands-on learning experience that connects students with Logan County’s agricultural heritage and the modern practices shaping its future. This year’s trip—rich in history, science, ecology, and a bit of adventure—offered students a full spectrum of lessons from the past and present. A Step Back in Time: Touring the 1865 Barn The visit began inside the farm’s historic 1865 barn, built at the close of the American Civil War. Mr. Stoll described the remarkable craftsmanship of the era, including mortise and tenon joinery...

A Month of Hands-On Learning and Outdoor Discovery

The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club has enjoyed a busy and inspiring month filled with weekly activities designed to spark curiosity, build environmental knowledge, and develop hands-on skills. From studying nocturnal predators to planting pollinator habitats and designing imaginary bird species, our young scientists continue to embrace every opportunity to learn about the natural world. Exploring the World of Owls A couple of weeks ago, the club focused on one of Ohio’s most fascinating nocturnal residents: owls. Students learned about the different species found in the state, their unique adaptations, feeding habits, and hunting behaviors. Discussions also included the ways...

Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club Enjoys a Day at Jolly Acres Farm

The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club spent a beautiful day at Jolly Acres Farm, thanks to the generosity of the Brewer family, who opened their farm for an unforgettable, hands-on learning experience. Students began the day by embracing the fall season—painting pumpkins, making apple cider, and touring the farm. The Brewers demonstrated the entire cider-making process, explaining how apples are prepared and pressed to produce fresh, delicious cider. Each student took part in the process and was rewarded with a refreshing bottle of their own creation. The fun continued with a hayride around the farm, where the group observed gravity-fed...

Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club Launches Its Eighth Year of Exploration and Stewardship

The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club (ESC) kicked off its eighth year on October 1, welcoming 29 enthusiastic students eager to engage with nature, learn about environmental science, and make a hands-on impact on their school campus. After introductions, each student shared what drew them to the program—most citing a love for nature, the outdoors, and a desire to make a difference. The first session set the tone for the year with a full campus environmental tour, showcasing the many outdoor learning areas and conservation features that make Benjamin Logan a hub for environmental education. Students visited the school garden,...

Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club Takes Action Against Invasive Species

The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club continues to make a positive impact on their campus and local ecosystem. This past Wednesday, club members dedicated their after-school session to removing invasive plant species, specifically bush honeysuckle and autumn olive — two non-native species known to cause significant harm to local environments. Invasive species often outcompete native plants for sunlight, water, and nutrients, ultimately reducing biodiversity and altering natural habitats. By clearing these aggressive invaders, the students are helping to restore ecological balance and open the door for beneficial native species to return and thrive. The students’ hard work also yielded an...
