This week’s Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club meeting brought learning to life through preparing, playing, touching, smelling, and tasting—all culminating in a warm, nutritious treat made from wholesome ingredients.
The evening focused on an important message: “You are what you eat.” Students explored how making healthy food choices and practicing proper hygiene contribute to living a healthy, active life.
With guidance from dieticians from Mary Rutan Hospital, materials provided by the Ohio Cattle Association, and support from Logan County Land Trust volunteers and Benjamin Logan teachers, students rotated through five interactive stations, each lasting twenty minutes and designed to keep students actively engaged.
Stations included:
- Preparing a healthy meal using lean beef and fresh vegetables
- Learning about beef by-products and how livestock contributes to everyday products
- Participating in fruit and vegetable trivia
- Creating a nutritious trail mix snack
- Playing a lively protein-themed Bingo game to reinforce nutrition knowledge
The evening combined fun and education, keeping students moving, learning, and tasting along the way.
Looking ahead, students will soon plant micro-greens, which they will later harvest and enjoy as part of a healthy lunch. In addition, a small group will travel to Myeerah Preserve and Kirkmont Center to install wood duck nesting boxes they built during previous sessions—continuing their hands-on conservation efforts.
The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club is supported through a partnership between Benjamin Logan Schools and the Logan County Land Trust, with leadership from teachers Ryan Kerns, Bruce Smith, Spencer Reames, and LCLT director Bob Stoll.
Please consider making a donation or supporting the organization’s mission so that future generations can continue to learn, explore, and care for the land we all share.
