Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club

Inspiring Curiosity, Stewardship, and a Love for the Outdoors

The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club is a hands-on educational partnership between Benjamin Logan Schools and the Logan County Land Trust, designed to connect students with the natural world through environmental education, outdoor exploration, conservation projects, and real-world scientific experiences.

For students in grades four and above, the Environmental Science Club provides opportunities to move beyond the classroom and experience science, agriculture, ecology, conservation, and stewardship firsthand. Through weekly programs, field experiences, guest speakers, restoration projects, and outdoor activities, students develop a deeper understanding of the environment and the important role they play in caring for it.

The club has become one of the Logan County Land Trust’s most impactful educational initiatives, helping inspire the next generation of environmental stewards while strengthening students’ connection to the land and natural resources around them.

Learning by Doing

The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club is built around active, hands-on learning experiences that encourage students to explore, observe, question, and engage with the environment directly.

Students regularly participate in activities such as:

  • Wildlife and habitat studies
  • Pollinator and native plant projects
  • Watershed and water quality education
  • Forestry and tree identification
  • Birding and migratory species monitoring
  • Trout and aquatic ecosystem studies
  • Soil health and regenerative agriculture education
  • Orienteering and outdoor navigation
  • Conservation and restoration projects
  • Gardening and food systems education
  • Environmental science experiments
  • Stewardship and community service activities

Programs are designed to help students understand how ecosystems function while building confidence, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Connecting Students to the Land

One of the unique strengths of the Environmental Science Club is its ability to combine science education with real-world environmental stewardship. Students are not only learning concepts, they are actively contributing to projects that improve and support local ecosystems.

Throughout the year, members may:

  • Install and monitor bluebird boxes, martin houses, and wood duck boxes
  • Restore pollinator habitat
  • Remove invasive plant species
  • Study local waterways and wetlands
  • Participate in Earth Day stewardship projects
  • Build wildlife habitat structures
  • Monitor trout aquariums and aquatic health
  • Explore local farms and conservation sites
  • Work alongside conservation professionals and naturalists

These experiences help students better understand the importance of protecting natural resources while creating lasting memories and connections to the outdoors.

Community Partnerships and Leadership

The Environmental Science Club is supported through the collaboration of dedicated educators, volunteers, conservationists, and community organizations committed to environmental education in Logan County.

The club is directed through the partnership of:

  • Benjamin Logan teachers
  • Logan County Land Trust volunteers and directors
  • Community educators and natural resource professionals
  • Conservation and wildlife organizations
  • Local agricultural and environmental partners

Guest speakers regularly include professionals from organizations such as:

  • Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR)
  • Logan County Solid Waste District
  • National Wild Turkey Federation
  • Trout Unlimited
  • Ohio State University Extension
  • Local conservation and agricultural organizations

These partnerships allow students to learn directly from experts working in environmental science, conservation, wildlife management, agriculture, and natural resource stewardship.

Building Future Stewards

The goal of the Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club extends far beyond science lessons. The program is designed to help students:

  • Develop curiosity and observation skills
  • Gain confidence outdoors
  • Understand environmental responsibility
  • Learn leadership and teamwork
  • Build appreciation for agriculture and conservation
  • Become active stewards of the land

Whether studying microscopic organisms under a microscope, planting pollinator gardens, learning about migratory birds, or exploring local woodlands, students gain experiences that help shape their understanding of the world around them.
