Logan County Solid Waste District Carbon Footprint Project

Working Together for Healthier Soil, Cleaner Water, and a Stronger Future

The Logan County Land Trust is proud to partner with the Logan County Solid Waste District, Logan Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), and the Logan County Health District on environmental initiatives designed to strengthen sustainability efforts throughout Logan County.

One of the most impactful collaborative efforts to date is the Carbon Footprint Reduction Project, an initiative focused on improving soil health, water quality, and long-term environmental resilience through the establishment of new cover crop acreage across sensitive watersheds in the region.

What is the Carbon Footprint Reduction Project?

The Carbon Footprint Reduction Project was developed to encourage agricultural practices that improve the health of the land while reducing environmental impacts. Through this partnership effort, approximately 500 acres of new cover crops were established within priority watershed areas throughout Logan County.

Cover crops are planted between traditional growing seasons and provide numerous environmental and agricultural benefits, including:

  • Improving soil structure and health
  • Reducing erosion and runoff
  • Increasing water infiltration
  • Supporting nutrient retention
  • Enhancing biodiversity
  • Reducing sediment movement into waterways
  • Capturing and storing carbon in the soil

By improving soil performance and reducing nutrient loss, these practices help strengthen both agricultural sustainability and watershed health.

Supporting Sustainable Agriculture in Logan County

Agriculture and conservation work hand in hand. Projects like this demonstrate how local partnerships can support farming operations while also protecting natural resources for future generations.

The Carbon Footprint Reduction Project helps farmers implement conservation practices that improve the long-term productivity and resilience of their land while contributing to broader environmental goals.

This initiative reflects the shared belief that protecting water quality, improving soil health, and preserving farmland are all connected parts of building a stronger and more sustainable Logan County.

A Collaborative Community Effort

The success of this project is rooted in partnership and shared stewardship. Organizations involved in the effort include:

  • Logan County Land Trust
  • Logan County Solid Waste District
  • Logan Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD)
  • Logan County Health District

Together, these organizations continue working to connect conservation, environmental education, waste reduction, and sustainable land management practices throughout the community.

Conservation Beyond Waste Management

The Logan County Solid Waste District is widely recognized for recycling and waste reduction services, but its role in environmental stewardship extends much further. Through collaborative conservation efforts like this project, the district helps support long-term sustainability initiatives that benefit both residents and the environment.

Likewise, the Logan County Land Trust continues to expand conservation partnerships that support:

  • Farmland preservation
  • Watershed protection
  • Regenerative agricultural practices
  • Habitat improvement
  • Environmental education
  • Community stewardship initiatives

These collaborative efforts help create measurable environmental impact while strengthening awareness and engagement throughout Logan County.

Building a More Sustainable Future

The Carbon Footprint Reduction Project represents more than a conservation initiative, it reflects a community-wide commitment to responsible stewardship of the land and water resources that sustain Logan County.

As environmental challenges continue to evolve, partnerships like these demonstrate how local organizations, farmers, educators, and community leaders can work together to create meaningful and lasting change.
