Farmland Preservation

Protecting the Farms, Fields, and Heritage of Logan County

Farmland is more than open space. It is the foundation of Logan County’s history, economy, culture, and future. The farms that shape our landscape provide food, fuel, fiber, wildlife habitat, and a lasting connection to generations of families who have cared for the land before us.

The Logan County Land Trust works to help preserve productive agricultural land and the rural character that defines our community. Through partnerships with landowners, conservation organizations, and local and state agencies, we support voluntary farmland preservation efforts that help ensure agricultural lands remain available for future generations.

As development pressures continue to grow across Ohio, protecting farmland has become increasingly important. Every acre preserved helps maintain local food production, supports agricultural economies, protects natural resources, and preserves the landscapes that make Logan County unique.

Through preservation, conservation, and education, the Logan County Land Trust works to ensure that Logan County remains a place where agriculture thrives, natural resources are protected, and people remain connected to the land around them.

Our work extends beyond protecting acreage on a map. It is about preserving heritage, supporting responsible stewardship, educating future generations, and creating opportunities for our community to learn, engage, and become involved.

Whether through helping a family preserve a farm, supporting conservation initiatives, or introducing young people to the outdoors through hands-on educational experiences, our mission is rooted in creating a lasting impact.

What is Farmland Preservation?

Farmland preservation is the voluntary protection of agricultural land from future non-agricultural development. One of the most common tools used in preservation efforts is an agricultural conservation easement.

An agricultural easement allows landowners to permanently protect their property while continuing to:

  • Farm the land
  • Sell or transfer ownership
  • Pass the farm to future generations
  • Maintain agricultural production

Preservation agreements are designed to keep land in agricultural use while respecting private property rights and supporting long-term stewardship.

Why Farmland Preservation Matters

Protecting farmland benefits both current and future generations. Preserved farmland helps:

  • Maintain Logan County’s agricultural heritage
  • Support local farming families and rural economies
  • Protect wildlife habitat and natural resources
  • Improve water quality and soil health
  • Reduce development pressure on productive land
  • Preserve scenic rural landscapes and open spaces
  • Strengthen community identity and local history

Farmland preservation also creates opportunities for future generations to remain connected to agriculture and the land itself.

Working Together to Protect the Land

The Logan County Land Trust collaborates with landowners and conservation partners to help explore preservation opportunities and available programs. We work alongside organizations such as:

These partnerships help connect landowners with educational resources, technical assistance, and preservation programs designed to support long-term conservation goals.

Preserving More Than Land

Farmland preservation is about more than acreage. It is about preserving stories, traditions, livelihoods, and a way of life deeply rooted in Logan County.

Many preserved farms represent generations of stewardship and family history. Protecting these landscapes helps ensure that future generations can continue to experience the beauty, productivity, and heritage of our rural communities.

At the Logan County Land Trust, we believe that conservation and agriculture can work hand in hand to create a stronger future for our region.
