For the third consecutive year, the Logan County Land Trust and Kirkmont Center have partnered to provide young people in Logan County with a one-of-a-kind outdoor learning experience. Enviro-Camp 25 began this morning, August 4th, welcoming 29 enthusiastic campers ready to explore the natural world and their role in protecting it.
Day One: Finding Your Way
The camp opened with the theme “Finding Your Way.” Campers rotated through sessions designed to sharpen their navigation skills and broaden their environmental awareness:
- Compass Training – Students learned the basics of orienteering, using a compass to find directions and navigate terrain.
- GPS Applications – Campers were introduced to modern tools for mapping, data collection, and environmental research.
- Drone Exploration – By flying drones, participants saw firsthand how aerial views can be used to assess habitat conditions and environmental health.
These hands-on activities gave campers a blend of traditional and modern skills, connecting timeless outdoor knowledge with today’s technology.
The Week Ahead
The rest of the week promises an exciting lineup of sessions designed to immerse campers in the natural and cultural heritage of Ohio:
- Tuesday: Ornithology and botany hikes to identify birds, plants, and their habitats.
- Wednesday: A study of Ohio’s Indigenous culture, exploring the deep history of people who lived on and cared for this land long before statehood.
- Thursday: Lessons in fly tying and fly casting, introducing students to both the art and science of fishing.
- Friday: An interpretive geology hike, uncovering the unique features of the local landscape and how they shape the environment we know today.
Carrying the Mission Forward
Enviro-Camp exemplifies the mission of the Logan County Land Trust: to educate and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. By combining fun, hands-on learning with meaningful lessons in conservation, the camp empowers young people to understand, respect, and protect the land and resources around them.
