Home Sweet Home: Purple Martins at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center

There’s a new addition to campus at the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center (OHP)—and it’s for the birds… in the best way possible!

Through a partnership with the Logan County Land Trust, OHP has installed new purple martin birdhouses, creating a dedicated habitat to support these remarkable migratory birds. Purple martins travel thousands of miles each year (from as far away as South America) to return to nesting sites across Ohio. Providing safe, well-managed housing is essential to their success.

Learning Meets Action

Before the birdhouses were raised, students in the Environmental Science and Animal Science programs had the opportunity to learn from ODNR ornithologist Mr. Lautenbach, who shared valuable insight into purple martin behavior, habitat needs, and conservation efforts.

Students didn’t just learn, they got involved. After gaining a deeper understanding of the species, they helped raise and install the birdhouse on campus, turning knowledge into action.

Creating Habitat, Inspiring Stewardship

Purple martins rely heavily on human-provided housing, making projects like this critical to their survival. The new birdhouses at OHP will serve as a safe nesting site while also giving students a unique, ongoing opportunity to observe and monitor bird activity up close.

This project reflects a larger goal: connecting students to real-world environmental stewardship while making a meaningful impact on local wildlife.

A Partnership for the Future

This effort is made possible through collaboration between Ohio Hi-Point Career Center and the Logan County Land Trust, organizations committed to education, conservation, and community engagement.

As the season progresses, we look forward to watching these houses fill with activity—and to seeing students continue to learn from the natural world right outside their classroom doors.
