6th Annual Summer Tour Copy

July 31 @ 7:00 am - 7:30 pm

Dear Friends and Followers of the Logan County Land Trust

We are excited to announce a summer opportunity to visit Great Council State Park, The Green Acres Foundation, and take a sternwheeler riverboat cruise on the Ohio River. The trip is being offered by the Logan County Land Trust. This is our 6th annual Summer Tour.

The trip will take place on Friday, July 31. We will be leaving from the Benjamin Logan Schools bus circle at 7:00 A. M. and returning at about 7:30 P. M. Transportation will be provided via a motor coach provided by the Lima Buckeye Bus Company.

We will travel from the Benjamin Logan campus to Ohio’s newest state park which opened in June of 2024. Founded on the site of the Shawnee village of Old Chillicothe, Great Council State Park celebrates and honors the history of the Native Americans and European settlers of the region.

The highlight of this park is a 12,000-square-foot interpretive center modeled after a historic Shawnee longhouse.

From the park in Greene County, we will travel to the Greenacres Foundation in Cincinnati. The mission of the foundation is to preserve for the public an area reflecting the traditional environment of Indian Hill and its historical significance by preserving Greenacres in its current state of woodland and farmland; to encourage conservation and appreciation of nature by providing to the public, particularly children, the opportunity to study and enjoy plant and animal life in their natural settings; and to encourage appreciation of music and culture by providing facilities and an atmosphere that will encourage artists to display their talents for all age groups.

We will be touring the Ley Field, Compost Facility and nearby pastures. The Ley Field is a vegetable and flower production area that uses livestock and cover crops to build soil fertility. The compost facility takes waste from events, school lunches and the equine stables. There  will also be cattle/sheep nearby. The cattle and sheep are 100% grass- fed and grass finished. Throughout the tour we will discuss research projects, including the Metabolomics study with Dr.  Van Vliet of Utah State University. This study focuses on the health qualities of food produced using Re-Generative farming practices. Box lunches from Wenger’s will be served at the farm.

The importance of the Ohio River to Ohio’s natural history economy cannot be overestimated. What better way to explore the Ohio River ecosystem than on a sternwheeler. From the Greenacres Foundation we will head to the Ohio River for a narrated one and one half hour cruise.

Following the cruise,  we will return to Benjamin Logan with a dinner stop en route.

The cost for the trip is seventy-five dollars ($75) for adults and fifty-five dollars ($55) for students (18 and under). This amount covers only a portion of the cost of transportation, admission and tours, as well as lunch and dinner. The balance of the expenses are funded through grants obtained by the Land Trust. Those who attended last year’s shortened tour are entitled to a $10 discount. Current individual LCLT members may register with a $10 discount. Family memberships are entitled to two adult and one child discount for a total of $25 off. If you wish to become a member ($25 individual, $50 family), you may also take advantage of the reduced price offer.

Space is limited. We can take forty people only. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We hope that as many of you as possible will take advantage of this offer to learn more about the environment and habitat diversity in Ohio.

This is a very special opportunity. We hope that you will join us.

Sincerely,

Bruce Smith
